The Topic of the Month: FIFA 2010 World Cup
So football is not everyone’s favourite thing, but everyone (nearly) is talking about the FIFA 2010 World Cup in South Africa. After what seems like an eternity, the World Cup is finally here. In South Africa, the party is already under way.
The competition will be the 19th FIFA World Cup and takes place between 11 June and 11 July 2010. There are 32 teams who have qualified for the tournament – so who is going to win?
Of the countries involved in the Comenius partnership, there is only Spain and England who have qualified. So it is probably fair to say that our Spanish students (and teachers) want Spain to win, and that students (and yes staff) in England want them to win. But what about the rest of you guys?
Belgium, Bulgaria, Finland and Poland– who do you want to win? Who do you think will win? And, why?
Spain, (lets say you cannot choose your own country) who do you want to win and who do you think will win? Why?
England, (again, you cannot choose your own country) if England don’t win, then who would you prefer to see win the World Cup? Why?
Both La Liga in Spain, and the Premiership in England are hugely popular with TV audiences across Europe, so finding out which teams the Comenius countries will be supporting should be an interesting exercise.
What do I think? Well, although it pains me to say it, I think Spain are one of the favourites. They are the reigning European champions, have some of the most gifted footballers in the world, play the game in a very attractive way and have got rid of the label “under achievers”.
I would love England to win, but with our record when it comes to penalties you just can’t trust the situation.
You cannot write-off the usual suspects either. There are some fantastic teams from South America, and Italy, Holland and Germany are always dangerous in tournaments. Whatever the outcome, it is sure to be an exciting few weeks, particularly if you are a football fan.
There are so many questions that need to be debated within our partnership – so get stuck into this blog and leave your opinions below. When contributing, please leave your opinion and state which country you are posting from.
James

I'm not very interested in football, but I do hope we will see fair play and sportsmanship. Of course,I hope that the best team win.
Spain is the favorite because it has the best team right now, but I think the world cup will be won by Brasi
In Poland lots of people love football and I`ve heard a great number of its fans, supporting Spain or England:)Let the best team win, providing us with wonderful moments while watching games on TV.
I really enjoy going to a football match, but tv annoys me...
If I had the opportunity to attend a match, I would enjoy the British team for the atmosphere, the flags... and the Spanish team really for the way they play... It's really a woman's view... I hear the music, trumpets...on one side, and the players, nearly dancing on the pitch for the second team... Not really expert or technical...But I would enjoy anyway...
Another thing: I hope my students won't enjoy too much as it's exams time...
In Poland lots of people enjoy watching or playing football. Unfortunately our team is too weak to take part in the World Championships. When I asked some people who they support they mostly answered: Spain or England;):)
Hello from Finland,
I would have wanted England to start off by winning the USA, but on the other hand it is also a good thing that the USA do well in the games so that football would gain more ground overseas.
Mr Green had a black moment, but everything is still possible.
I think the most qualified teams to win the FIFA woeld championship are Spain and Brazil, but England is also a great tem to win.
But i think Spain will win the World Championship because is the best team in the world now!

the truth is that I don't love football but I enjoy watching football matches when the countries football teams play, because they are amazing. I think Spain is a possible winner of the World Cup 2010.
I believe that the favorite is Spain, since it has the best generation of football players of his history, and has demonstrated that it plays very well.
I like football so much. I think that Spain is the favourite team for win this cup world, but the others teams are good too.
The other day, Englan played against U.S team, and were equal. I think that U.S team is better than England, because its way of play is more united than the way of England. But England is a great football team too. =)
I`m think brazil, because a have good team and good players. i´m say spain, of course, but as don´t say.
Hi I'm Spanish
Well, if I can not say Spain, I think that Brasil or Argentina will win, because they are very good football team.
I'd like Italy to win the world cup, as they have far more experienced players. They have a top-class goalkeeper (Buffon ^_^) and have won it four times. I would like them to win as they are an interesting team to watch and they play with such skill. But Spain are favourites and i think they will probably win the cup, but Spain's best world cup result was fourth place yet spain have an easy group (Honduras, Switzerland, Chile..). I wouldn't mind who'll..win but i doubt England will.. or Brazil
From England ;)

Hello from Spain. I think that Spain will win this World Championships. The Spanish team is a very strong team. We have 5 or 6 great players and they can win this competition.
I think that Spain will win because Spain has the best team right now.
Hi, I'm from England, and if England don't win I would like to see Italy go all the way. I don't know why, I just like Italy! Although I'm watching the football, I am put off watching many of the smaller matches because of the Vuvuzela's, but I am keen to see the progress of many of the countys that are favourites to win the cup
I like Foot. It's unfortunate that South Africa should be eliminated =(. Me, I'm for Portugal since the start of World Cup ( I'm not lying ).
Congratulation Spain!! We could watch a very interesting match and the players really deserved winning.
Did you enjoy the match?
Sorry for England ...but that's football!

Well England have failed again - something that we are used to. The team played poorly in the first stages and were lucky to qualify for the game against Germany. In that game, England were thrashed despite scoring the goal that was not given. Spain continue to play well and have reached the last 8. My 3 top teams at present are Spain, Brazil and Argentina with Germany in the background and waiting for any slip-ups.
my internet and television links failed last Tuesday... I just had the radio to follow the different matches...A different way of sharing moments and atmospheres, but I think the matches were great and the scores deserved....Maybe my students will have a new motivation to learn Dutch... I can't wait tomorrow to sit in front of my screen...but so far the 'spirit of sport' has won... Congratulations to everybody...

What do I know?
Top teams predicted Spain, Brazil and Argentina. Predicting 1 out of 3 is not good.
Watched Germany destroy Argentina with some brilliant football - most impressive. AND Germany are scoring goals.
Good to see 3 European teams in the last 4.
Enjoy the remaining games.

Congratulations to Spain for Winning the World Cup. They were clearly the best team in the competition - they palyed the best football with the best players. When they beat Germany - it looked as if they had 15 players on the pitch - they were able to keep the ball for long periods of the game.
In the Final, it was a disgrace that the Netherlands tried to destroy Spain with their violence. The referee could have sent off several Dutch players - perhaps he should have done.
I hope that everyone in Spain will join in the biggest party to celebrate the victory. Congratulations to the Spanish team
